Holy Week
Apr 09, 2009 at 05:44 AM
{mosimage}As all of Christendom comes together to reflect on the Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection, Catholics worldwide begin a sacred three day celebration called the Triduum which consists of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. These days are the highest of holy days where we enter into the mystery of God’s love for all of us by the gift of Jesus Christ our Savior.

Holy Thursday or the Mass of the Lord’s Supper begins the celebration of these days and orients us towards Jesus’ final act with his disciples where he commands them to perpetuate the celebration of the Eucharist, and then shows them how to live it by washing his disciples’ feet. As we begin the sacred Triduum, we begin with the celebration of the Eucharist, the source and summit of Catholic life. From Christ’s great gift to his disciples and to us, we like them, are drawn into following Christ’s example of service by offering our lives in service for God’s work.

Good Friday, the day when Christ’ offers his life on the Cross, takes us more deeply into the mystery of God’s gift of himself whereby we discover that Christ did more than wash feet with water. He washed us in His own blood. With this, we come to realize that true service will demand of us, the gift of self. In a world that promotes the self, the experience of the Passion of the Lord calls true followers of Christ to make of their lives an offering in which one discovers the meaning of the passage “ he who wishes to preserve his life must lose it, but he who loses it for my sake will have eternal life. “

With Jesus’ own three days in the tomb, creation is restored and death is conquered, no longer feared. For now though, we enter these days silently with great reverence and in anticipation of discovering anew the great Mystery of the Our Lord’s Passion, Death and that joyful Easter Proclamation for which every ear longs to hear. May the Lord bless you and your families as we prayerfully enter these holy days with the Lord.
