Divine Worship (Liturgy) For it was from the side of Christ as he slept the sleep of death upon the cross that there came forth 'the wondrous sacrament of the whole Church.' For this reason, the Church celebrates in the liturgy above all the Paschal mystery by which Christ accomplished the work of our salvation. It is this mystery of Christ that the Church proclaims and celebrates in her liturgy so that the faithful may live from it and bear witness to it in the world: For it is in the liturgy, especially in the divine sacrifice of the Eucharist, that "the work of our redemption is accomplished," and it is through the liturgy especially that the faithful are enabled to express in their lives and manifest to others the mystery of Christ and the real nature of the true Church. - from The Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1067-68

{mosimage} Interested in this Apostolate? Please Contact Sue Gammon (919) 570-0070 ext. 108. In every celebration of the Eucharist, there should be a sufficient number of ministers of Holy Communion so that it may be distributed in a reverent and orderly manner. {mosimage} The ushers of today have descended from a long line of people of God who have gone before them. During the time of Christ, the doorkeepers of the temple numbered in the hundreds and were the forerunners of today's ushers. The more immediate predecessor of today's usher can be found in the clerical order of porter, instituted in the 3rd Century A.D. During those times, it was the duty of the porters or ushers to guard the door of the church against any intruders who might disturb the service. For more information contact Sue Gammon at (919) 570-0070 ext. 108 Usher Schedule |

{mosimage}Historically, a Sacristan was an officer who is charged with the care of the sacristy, the church, and their contents. In ancient times many duties of the sacristan were performed by the doorkeepers (ostiarii), later by the mansionarii and the treasurers. The Decretals of Gregory IX (lib. I, tit. xxvi, "De officio sacristæ") speak of the sacristan as if he had an honourable office attached to a certain benefice, and say that his duty was to care for the sacred vessels, vestments, lights, etc. Nowadays the sacristan is elected or appointed. |

{mosimage} Sacred music, being a complementary part of the solemn liturgy, participates in the general scope of the liturgy, which is the glory of God and the sanctification and edification of the faithful. It contributes to the decorum and the splendor of the ecclesiastical ceremonies, and since its principal office is to clothe with suitable melody the liturgical text proposed for the understanding of the faithful, its proper aim is to add greater efficacy to the text, in order that through it the faithful may be the more easily moved to devotion and better disposed for the reception of the fruits of grace belonging to the celebration of the most holy mysteries. --Inter Sollicitudines, Pope Pius X If you are interested in participating in Sacred music during liturgy at Saint Catherine's, please contact Brenda Rebilas, Director of Music at 919-570-0070 ext.107, or by e-mail at brebilas@stcathsiena.org . The Cantor's primary role is to proclaim the Psalm at Mass and to lead the faithful in the acclamations and songs in the Mass. During this time the songs of the faithful on Earth join the celestial choirs of heaven in Christ's ultimate prayer and sacrifice to his heavenly Father. |
